Summer is finally here, which means you’re packing your bags for vacation! While you check out the local hotspots or tourist attractions, don’t forget about your smile. Whether you’re traveling for a few days or a couple of weeks, neglecting your dental health for only a short time can harm your teeth and gums. Not to mention, you don’t want a dental emergency ruining your vacation. Here are 5 tips to keep your mouth healthy when traveling this summer.
1. Schedule a Cleaning and Checkup
A cleaning and checkup will ensure your smile looks its best for your vacation photos. Besides removing buildup and polishing your teeth, your dentist will also look for anything concerning, like tooth decay or gum disease. It can be treated before you leave. You’ll have peace of mind knowing your mouth is healthy to lessen your risk of a dental emergency.
2. Create an Travel-Sized Oral Hygiene Kit
Whether you’re flying, driving, or taking the bus, brushing and flossing can be difficult when you’re not at home. Don’t skip brushing or flossing while you’re away. Create a travel-sized oral hygiene kit to make it easy to brush at least twice per day and floss every night.
3. Drink Plenty of Water
It’s easy to get dehydrated during the summer, so it’s important to drink plenty of water. Not only is it essential for your overall wellness but also your dental health. Every sip will keep your mouth moist to combat bacteria growth. It will also rinse your teeth and gums in between brushing and flossing. Healthcare professionals recommend drinking at least eight 8oz glasses of water everyday.
4. Watch What You Eat
You’ll be surrounded by many tempting foods and drinks, but limit your consumption of sugars and starches, which feed cavity-causing bacteria. Moderate your alcohol consumption because it can cause a dry mouth and promote bacteria growth. Many alcoholic beverages also contain a lot of sugar. If you can’t resist a glass of wine at dinner, drink it all at once instead of sipping it to limit its contact with your teeth. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and keep your mouth moist.
5. Stop Bad Oral Habits
Your teeth can come in handy to open bottle lids or chip bags while you’re traveling, but it’s best to break the habit. Don’t use your teeth as tools or chew on an edible objects to prevent a dental emergency.
Keep your oral health a priority to ensure you look and feel your best. Giving your teeth and gums a little attention everyday will ensure your vacation doesn’t come back to haunt your smile.
