Are you planning on getting dental implants in Lawrenceville in the near future? One of first step of restoring your smile is the placement procedure. As much as you would like to go on to eat all your favorite foods the next day, this isn’t exactly how it works. You will need to take it easy for a while so your implants can heal properly. Your dentist shares some tips to help you care for your dental implants so you can increase the probability of their success.
Control the Bleeding
It is normal to see some bleeding after your dental implants are placed. This could occur up to 72 hours after the procedure. To reduce this, bite down on gauze for about an hour. Continue to do this every 6 to 10 hours as it becomes necessary. Another method you could use is biting down on a black tea bag. This will make it easier for the area to clot.
Reduce Swelling
Swelling is not uncommon after dental implant surgery. If this is bothering you, try placing a cold compress or ice pack on your face for about 15 to 20 minutes. Remember to drink plenty of water and sleep in a propped-up position as well.
Manage Your Discomfort
A few days after you have your dental implant placement procedure, the pain should ease. Until you reach this point, it is okay to take an over-the-counter pain killer that is recommended by your dentist. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are good options. If necessary, your dentist may also prescribe you medication. Be sure to follow your dentist’s instructions and take as directed. You should begin taking a pain-reliever just before the anesthesia wears off.
Maintain Excellent Oral Hygiene
It is especially important to keep your smile clean while your mouth is healing. If you aren’t doing so, you are more likely to experience an infection which is the most common cause of a dental implant failure. Brush and floss as normal but avoid the implant and the area around it. Rinse your mouth out with a glass of warm water with a teaspoon of salt added after every meal.
Get Some Rest
You may be able to return to work after a couple days, but strenuous physical activity should be avoided for a week or so. If your job is physically demanding, it is best you take a few days off. Make sure that you are getting at least 8 hours of sleep every single night.
Eat Carefully
During the initial healing process, only chew on the side of your mouth where you have natural teeth. Avoid hot foods and drinks. When you drink something, do not use a straw and be careful not to accidently swish liquids over the site of the procedure. Avoid hard and crunchy foods for as long as you feel post-operative symptoms.
Don’t Smoke or Drink Alcohol
Both of these have a negative impact on the healing process. You should refrain from smoking for at least two months after you have your dental implants placed. At the very least, avoid alcoholic drinks for 72 hours after your procedure.
Getting your dental implants is exciting, but you shouldn’t get ahead of yourself. By taking the steps listed above, your smile will heal up in no time!
